Haggai: "Prophet of the Lord to the Jews in 520 B.C. Little is known of his personal history. He lived soon after the Captivity and was a contemporary of Zechariah (cf. Hag 1:1 with Zech 1:1). "After the return from the Captivity, the Israelites set up the altar on its base, established daily worship, and laid the foundation for the second temple; then they were compelled to cease building for some years. However, during his reign, Darius Hystaspes (Ezra 4-6; Haggai; Zech 1-6) helped and encouraged the Jews to go ahead and allowed no opposition. In the second year of Darius (520) Haggai fulfilled his brilliant mission of rebuking and encouraging the Jews. The five short messages that make up his book are all dated, occupying only 3 months and 23 days; and in those few weeks the whole situation changed from defeat and discouragement to victory. Zechariah assisted Haggai in the last month of his recorded ministry (Zech 1:1-6)." (THE NEW INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, © 1987 Zondervan, p. 410)
